St. Francis, Poly, Flintridge Prep, Maranatha Fall in CIF

The St. Francis High School varsity boys’ volleyball team was edged at Dos Pueblos High in Goleta, 25-21, 17-25, 14- 25, 25-20, 15-13, in a CIF-Southern Section Division II second-round match last Saturday. The Golden Knights concluded the campaign as the Mission League runner- up with a 5-1 record (19-7 overall). Senior captain Gabe Metcalf racked up 37 assists, 14 digs, two kills and one ace while senior Travis Brow registered 14 kills, eight digs, one ace, one block and one assist. Senior captain James Clapp tallied 11 kills, three aces, three digs and one block while senior Blake Welsh produced 10 kills, five blocks, two assists and one dig. Junior Titus Rodz recorded nine kills, eight digs, three blocks, three assists and one ace while junior Will Martinez finished with seven kills, one block and one dig. Senior Aidan Joel Lopez collected seven digs, two aces and one assist while senior Trevor Shackleton had 11 digs, five assists and one ace. SFHS swept visiting King High of Riverside, 25-11, 25-17, 25-19, in its CIF firstround opener last Thursday as Metcalf racked up 39 assists, six digs, two aces, one block and one kill. Clapp registered 13 kills, two blocks, one dig and one assist, Brown tallied 11 kills, six digs and one block, and sophomore Ryan Bender finished with 10 kills, nine digs, one block and one assist. Martinez had seven kills and one block, Rodz produced 11 digs, seven kills, five aces and one block, and Shackleton collected eight digs and one assist. Welsh had two kills, Joel Lopez recorded three digs and senior Drew Miller had one dig. The Golden Knights recently concluded the regular season by competing in the Redondo Union/Mira Costa Mike Cook Classic and finished with a 4-2 record. SFHS swept Coronado High of Henderson, Nevada, 25-20, 25-21, in its tournament finale as Metcalf registered 20 assists, two digs and one block. The Golden Knights defeated Capistrano Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano, 20-25, 25-17, 15-9, in a tournament match as Metcalf racked up 24 assists, seven digs, two blocks and one kill. St. Francis swept San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas, 25-17, 25-22, to open the second day of tournament action as Metcalf collected 17 assists, seven digs, three kills and one block. Bender tallied five kills, three blocks and one ace while Rodz recorded five kills, two digs and one ace. Martinez had four kills, three blocks and one dig while Clapp finished with four kills, two blocks, one ace and one assist. Brown produced three kills, one block, one dig and one assist, Miller registered five digs, two assists, one kill and one ace, and Joel Lopez had one dig. The Golden Knights were swept by Canyon High of Anaheim, 25-19, 25-20, to end the first day of tournament play. Metcalf recorded 18 assists and four digs, Martinez produced eight kills and two digs, and Rodz tallied six kills, three digs and one assist. Clapp had four kills, one assist, one dig and one ace, Bender finished with three kills and one block, and Brown registered three kills. Miller collected six digs and two assists, sophomore Matt Polenzani and Shackleton each made two digs, and Joel Lopez had one dig. SFHS swept El Camino Real High of Woodland Hills, 25-13, 25-17, in a tournament match. Metcalf registered 17 assists, six digs, two kills and one block. The Golden Knights lost to Redondo Union High of Redondo Beach, 29-27, 25- 22, in their tournament opener. Metcalf racked up 18 assists, six digs, two blocks, one kill and one ace while Bender collected 10 kills, four digs and one block.

POLYTECHNIC
The Panthers were ousted by visiting Woodbridge High of Irvine, 25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 25-22, in the first round of the CIFSouthern Section Division IV playoffs last Thursday. Poly concluded the campaign as undefeated Prep League champions with an 8-0 record (15-2 overall). Junior Pierre Vincent racked up 27 digs, 14 kills and two blocks, junior Scout Hollingsworth registered 15 digs, 14 kills and one ace, and junior Jared Gray tallied 20 digs, seven kills and one ace. Junior Cole Mallinger finished with 11 digs, five blocks and four kills while freshman Jack Gomez produced 15 digs, two blocks, two kills and one ace. Senior Bardia Vincent collected 21 digs while freshman Jad Ammar had six kills and three digs. The Panthers recently ended the regular season by sweeping visiting Palos Verdes Chadwick, 25-4, 25-14, 25-17. Mallinger recorded 11 kills, Hollingsworth tallied 10 kills and Pierre Vincent finished with seven kills. Freshman AB Shorter and Gray each registered four kills, Gomez collected two kills and Bardia Vincent had one kill. Poly previously picked up a road sweep at Providence High in Burbank, 25-16, 25- 18, 25-16, as Pierre Vincent and Hollingsworth each finished with 10 kills. Ammar produced seven kills, Mallinger and Gray each recorded four kills, and Gomez had two kills.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves were swept at Calabasas, 25-17, 25-18, 25-21, in their CIF-Southern Section Division III wildcard match last Tuesday. Flintridge Prep concluded the campaign third in the Prep League standings with a 4-4 record (10-15 overall). Kerry Ji registered eight kills, Daniel Choi tallied six kills and Kyle Yun produced five kills. Preston Chen and Zachary Tsai each recorded two kills while Dylan Choi had one kill. Flintridge Prep previously closed the regular season by beating visiting Providence High of Burbank, 25-17, 20-25, 25- 11, 25-14, in a Prep League match. Jake Matsumoto racked up 22 assists, Chen registered 16 assists and one kill, and Ji recorded 14 kills. Tsai tallied 10 kills, Daniel Choi finished with nine kills and Yun produced four kills.

MARANATHA
The Minutemen were ousted by visiting Lancaster, 18-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18, in their CIF-Southern Section Division IV wildcard match last Tuesday. Maranatha finished the campaign as the Olympic League runner-up with a 6-2 record (12-7 overall). Senior Alec Smith racked up 19 kills, 11 blocks, three digs and one ace while junior Chris Smith registered nine kills. Senior Lucas Dacosta tallied 15 digs, eight kills and four blocks while junior Bryan Chi produced 24 digs, three kills, two blocks and one ace. Senior Luke Deverian collected 15 assists, nine blocks, three digs and two kills while senior Andrew Round finished with 32 digs and one ace. The Minutemen previously closed the regular season with a 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19 league victory at Heritage Christian High in Northridge. Alec Smith registered 16 kills, five blocks and two digs, Chi tallied 13 kills and nine digs, and Dacosta racked up 18 digs, 11 kills, three aces, three blocks and one assist. Chris Smith recorded eight kills and three blocks while senior Jordan Boozer had six blocks, three kills and two digs. Deverian produced 23 assists, seven digs, two kills, one ace and one block while Round collected 31 digs and three assists. Senior Aaron Chang finished with 25 assists and five digs while senior David Bush had 10 digs.

LA SALLE
The Lancers lost to visiting Bishop Amat High of La Puente, 3-1, in their season finale on April 18. Sophomore Josh Cruz racked up 24 assists, 11 digs and two kills while sophomore Sam Riechmann registered 10 kills and two blocks. Senior Cameron Lee tallied nine kills, two aces and one block while senior Gavin Hussain recorded six digs, five kills and two aces. La Salle finished the campaign tied for fourth in the Del Rey League standings with a 1-7 record (8-14 overall).
