Maranatha, Flintridge Prep Top League Standings

The Maranatha High School varsity baseball team competed in the Boras Classic and finished with a 2-2 record after narrowly losing to Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, 3-2, in an extra-inning tournament game last Friday.

Senior Cider Canon went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, sophomore Doug Zuniga went 2-for-4 and senior Hudson Story recorded a triple. Senior Isaac Ton tallied a hit and an RBI while freshman Eric Zdunek finished with a hit and a run. Senior Garrett McGuigan pitched 2.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout while sophomore Matthew Vazquez had one strikeout over a pair of scoreless innings.

The Minutemen edged Santa Margarita High of Rancho Santa Margarita, 5-4, in an extra-inning tournament game last Thursday as Canon drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly. He finished the contest 2-for-4 with a run and an additional RBI. Sophomore Zach Strickland allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over seven innings while junior AJ Beltre earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Senior Bryan Richman went 2-for-4 while senior Judson Pitre produced a double and an RBI. Senior Dylan Zdunek recorded a hit and two RBIs, Ton tallied a hit, two runs and a walk, and Story finished with a hit, a run and a walk. Eric Zdunek had a base hit while Zuniga walked once and scored a run.

Maranatha picked up a 10-4 victory over Villa Park on the second day of tournament play last Wednesday as senior Jackson Hisey allowed four unearned runs on two hits and no walks with four strikeouts in a complete-game performance. Canon went 3-for-5 with two runs and a steal while Dylan Zdunek went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs. Eric Zdunek went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Ton went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, and Zuniga registered a double, two runs and a walk. Pitre tallied a hit and two RBIs, freshman Noah Everly finished with a hit and a walk, and Story had a base hit. Richman collected three walks, two runs and a steal while Beltre was credited with an RBI and a run.

The Minutemen opened tournament action with a 6-2 loss to Orange Lutheran High last Tuesday. Eric Zdunek went 2-for-3 with a double and a run, Canon went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a steal, and Everly recorded a double and an RBI. Beltre and Zuniga each tallied a base hit, Richman had two walks and a run, and Story walked once.

Maranatha recently extended its win streak to a season-best 11 games after crushing host Whittier Christian High in La Habra, 11-4, in an Olympic League matchup. Richman went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs, an RBI and two walks, Canon went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a steal and a walk, and Zuniga went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs, two runs and two steals. Beltre, who had a hit and an RBI, pitched 4.1 innings scoreless innings with five strikeouts, three hits and a walk while Strickland had five strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Dylan Zdunek recorded a double, an RBI and a run while Story tallied a double and a steal. Everly produced a hit, a run and two walks while Eric Zdunek registered a hit and a run. Pitre walked and scored once while Ton scored twice and was credited with an RBI.

The Minutemen previously blanked visiting Whittier Christian, 4-0, as Hisey twirled a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts, two walks and one hit while maintaining a perfect 0.00 ERA in league play. Richman went 3-for-3 with a double, two steals, a run and a walk, Ton went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, and Beltre finished with a triple and a run. Zuniga produced a hit and two RBIs while Story recorded a hit, an RBI, a run and a steal. Canon tallied a hit and two stolen bases while Dylan Zdunek had a base hit.

First-place Maranatha (15-4 overall, 9-0 in league) will host Heritage Christian High of Northridge for a league game on Friday, April 21, at 6 p.m. before visiting Charter Oak High in Covina on April 22. The Minutemen will conclude the regular season next week with a trio of nonleague games at home against Mayfair High of Lakewood, Camarillo and Serra High of Gardena.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

The Wolves snapped a two-game skid after posting a convincing 10-3 Prep League victory at Rio Hondo Prep in Arcadia on Saturday as sophomore Brian Xu went 2-for-3 with five RBIs, a run and a steal.

Freshman Will Grable, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, a walk and a steal, racked up seven strikeouts over three innings while freshman Nathan Sanok, who had a double, an RBI and a run, registered six strikeouts over three innings. Senior captain John Kully registered a double, three runs and a steal, sophomore Rowan Schaeffer tallied a hit and an RBI, and sophomore Calvin Chen produced a hit and a run. Senior captain Max Brunngraber walked once and scored while junior George Hayes walked once. Sophomore Will Koh finished with an RBI while senior captain Graham DesHotel stole a base.

Flintridge Prep lost at Nogales High in La Puente, 12-3, in a nonleague game last Wednesday as Kully went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a run. DesHotel and Grable each produced a hit and a run while Schaeffer had a base hit. Brunngraber tallied an RBI while Hayes walked once.

The Wolves were shut out at Alhambra, 3-0, in a nonleague game last Tuesday. DesHotel had a base hit, Xu walked twice and Grable walked once.

Flintridge Prep recently picked up its fourth consecutive victory and sixth in its last seven contests by beating visiting Polytechnic, 12-6, in a league game. Koh went 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs, two runs and a walk, Sanok went 2-for-3 with three runs and a walk, and Kully went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Schaeffer, who had a hit, three runs and a walk, pitched a complete game with five strikeouts to earn the win, Brunngraber recorded a hit, four RBIs and a walk, and Xu tallied a hit, two runs and an RBI. Grable scored twice, was credited with an RBI and walked once while DesHotel walked once.

Schaeffer went 2-for-4 with a run, Sanok registered a double, an RBI and a run, and Kully tallied a hit, an RBI and a run. Koh walked twice, scored once and was credited with an RBI, Chen and Grable each walked twice and scored once, and DesHotel and Xu each walked once.

First-place Flintridge Prep (12-7 overall, 7-2 in league) will visit Marshall High in Pasadena for a nonleague game today at 3:30 p.m. before visiting Monrovia on April 22. The Wolves will conclude the regular season next week with a pair of league games against Providence High of Burbank.

POLYTECHNIC

The Panthers lost at La Salle College Preparatory, 8-2, in a nonleague game on Saturday.

Junior captain Henry McDonald registered a double and a run while junior Sean Asperger tallied a hit, an RBI and a walk. Senior captain Adam Arther, who had a base hit at the plate, pitched a pair of scoreless innings with four strikeouts, one hit and one walk while sophomore Everson Mathis pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Senior Dash Ferrante scored once while senior Charlie Brunold and freshman Alex Chui each walked once.

Poly snapped a three-game losing streak by beating host Gabrielino High in San Gabriel, 5-3, in a nonleague game last Monday. McDonald went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs, a run and a steal while junior Luke Kim went 2-for-4 with three runs and three steals. Junior Elliott Rowley allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks but racked up eight strikeouts over four innings to earn the win while Arther posted a save after striking out six over 2.2 scoreless innings with one hit and no walks. Asperger recorded a walk, an RBI and a run, Ferrante finished with a hit, an RBI and a steal, and junior Chase Engstrom produced a hit and a steal.

The Panthers recently lost a Prep League game at Flintridge Prep in La Cañada, 12-6. McDonald went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, a run, a steal and a walk while Kim went 2-for-4 with three steals and a run. Engstrom recorded a double, an RBI and a run while Mathis pitched a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout, one walk and no hits. Ferrante tallied a hit, an RBI, a run, a steal and a walk while sophomore Harrison Unanue and Asperger each produced a hit and a run. Rowley finished with a hit and an RBI while Arther had a base hit.

Poly previously dropped a league game to visiting Flintridge Prep, 6-1. Arther took a no-decision despite racking up 12 strikeouts over five innings with five hits, two walks and one earned run while senior Charlie Thorell pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts, one hit and one walk. McDonald recorded a double, two steals, a run and a walk while Asperger walked twice and stole a base.

The third-place Panthers (6-8 overall, 3-3 in league) will visit Providence High in Burbank for a league game today before closing out the regular season with a three-game series against Palos Verdes Chadwick next week.

LA SALLE

The Lancers posted their sixth consecutive victory by downing visiting Polytechnic, 8-2, in a nonleague game on Saturday.

David Mysza went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run while Travis Ochoa went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Adrian Hernandez twirled five hitless and scoreless innings with five strikeouts and three walks while Moses Aguirre, who scored once on offense, pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout. Will Clougherty registered a triple, two walks, an RBI and a run while Val Gomez tallied a double, two RBIs, a run and a walk. A-C Nieto recorded a hit, two RBIs and a walk while Mauricio Pavon produced a hit and a run. Hunter Vigil finished with an RBI, a run and a walk, Chris Cardenas scored once and Kyle Lima walked once.

La Salle defeated host Paraclete High in Lancaster, 9-4, in a Del Rey League game last Thursday. Gomez, who had a hit and three RBIs, tossed 6.1 innings with three strikeouts, four runs (one earned), five hits and one walk to earn the win. Mysza went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run, Clougherty went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Nieto went 2-for-4 with a run. Cardenas registered a double, an RBI and a run, Ochoa tallied a hit, two runs and an RBI, and Aguirre finished with a hit and a run.

La Salle College Preparatory’s Adrian Hernandez pitched five shutout innings with five strikeouts to help the Lancers beat visiting Polytechnic in a nonleague game on Saturday.

The Lancers recently competed in the St. Paul Tournament and finished with a 4-2 record after blanking St. Anthony High in Long Beach, 11-0, last Wednesday. Mysza went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs while Aguirre went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Morgan Sullivan tossed five scoreless innings with three strikeouts, two hits and two walks while Michael Smith pitched a pair of hitless and scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk. Gomez registered a hit, two RBIs, a run and a walk, Clougherty recorded a hit, two runs and a pair of walks, and Lima produced a double and a run. Drew Ward tallied a hit, two runs and an RBI, Cardenas finished with a hit, an RBI and a steal, and Pavon and Ochoa each had a hit and a run. Nieto collected an RBI, a run and a walk while Peter Callihan and Vigil each walked once.

La Salle defeated San Pedro, 9-5, in a tournament game last Monday as Mysza went 4-for-4 with a triple, two doubles, four RBIs, two runs and a steal. Aguirre went 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Cardenas went 2-for-4 with a run. Escamilla allowed one run on four hits and no walks with five strikeouts over four innings while Cortez Guzman pitched a perfect inning of relief with three strikeouts. Mysza registered a double, two RBIs and a run while Aguirre tallied a double and a run. Cardenas recorded a hit, two RBIs, a run and a walk, Ochoa produced a hit, a walk and a run, and Vigil had a base hit. Lima walked twice, scored a pair of runs and added an RBI, Ward scored twice and walked once and Nieto walked once and scored a run.

La Salle recently edged Glendora, 3-2, in a tournament matchup as Gomez pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, three walks, one hit and two unearned runs. Aguirre went 2-for-2 with a run, Cardenas recorded a hit and a run, and Clougherty tallied a hit and a walk. Pavon finished with a base hit while Callihan registered a walk, an RBI and a run. Mysza walked once and stole a base while Nieto had an RBI.

The Lancers were recently shut out by Beckman High of Irvine, 2-0, in a tournament game. Clougherty went 2-for-3 with a double while Mysza tallied a triple. Gomez registered a hit while Ochoa walked once.

La Salle previously lost its tournament opener against Palos Verdes, 13-2. Mysza tallied a double while Clougherty recorded a hit and a walk. Escamilla produced two RBIs while Ochoa scored once. Cardenas walked and scored once while Aguirre and Callihan each walked once.

The second-place Lancers (17-8 overall, 8-3 in league) will conclude the regular season next week with a pair of league games against Bishop Amat of La Puente on Monday, April 24, and Wednesday, April 26.

ST. FRANCIS

The Golden Knights lost to visiting Simi Valley, 8-1, in a nonleague game on Thursday.

Sophomore Jordan Lewallen went 2-for-4, junior Callum Clark finished with a hit and a run, and sophomore Caleb Thatcher tallied a hit and a pair of walks. Senior Lucas Dixon, who walked twice, recorded two strikeouts over 1.2 innings on the mound while junior Lucas Favretto had six strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Junior Kal-El Holguin walked twice while senior Grant Valentine, senior Liam Thatcher, junior Jordan Viramontes and sophomore Dane Shepard each walked once.

SFHS previously defeated visiting St. Bonaventure High of Ventura in a nonleague game, 4-1. Caleb Thatcher, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run, a walk and a steal, racked up eight strikeouts with three hits, one walk and one earned run over 5.1 innings to earn the win while senior Xander Douglas posted a three up, three down shutdown inning to earn a save. Dixon went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, a run and a steal while junior Brody Ruyle went 2-for-3 with a steal. Junior Aaron Hernandez produced a double while Dane Shepard had a base hit. Viramontes walked and scored once, Clark scored once and junior James Mishler stole a base.

Fourth-place St. Francis (11-11 overall, 7-8 in league) will host Crespi High of Encino for a Mission League game on Friday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks on Monday, April 24. The Golden Knights will conclude the regular season with a home matchup against Notre Dame on April 27.
