Mayfield Senior in Tournament; Poly, La Salle Post Wins

The Mayfield Senior varsity girls’ water polo team competed in the Ventura Buena Tournament last week and finished fifth overall with a 3-1 record.
The Cubs edged Carpinteria in overtime, 5-4, in their tournament finale on Saturday. Freshman goalie Etienne Lanchantin posted nine saves, sophomore Olivia Laguna recorded three goals and freshman Melia Whalen scored a pair of goals.
Mayfield defeated Redlands East Valley, 6-2, in a tournament game earlier on Saturday, as Lanchantin racked up 13 saves. Laguna produced two goals while senior Tillie VanAken, juniors Wendy Waite and Ella Yoon, and Whalen each had one goal.
The Cubs were edged by Rio Mesa High of Oxnard, 10-9, to end the first day of tournament play last Friday as VanAken finished with four goals. Lanchantin tallied 12 saves, Whalen and Waite each scored twice, and Laguna had one goal.
Mayfield routed Rancho Alamitos High of Garden Grove, 12-1, in its tournament opener earlier on Friday. Whalen racked up a game-high five goals while Lanchantin tallied seven saves. VanAken registered three goals, Waite produced two goals and Laguna recorded one goal.
The Cubs previously lost a Prep League game at Polytechnic, 15-4. Whalen had two goals, VanAken and junior Maggie Mazurek each scored once, and Lanchantin finished with 10 saves.
Mayfield (7-9 overall, 1-3 in league) will host Flintridge Prep of La Cañada Flintridge in a league game on Friday, Jan. 13, at 5:15 p.m., before hosting Westridge School on Thursday, Jan. 19.

POLY

Polytechnic sophomore Ani Hovsepyan helped the Panthers defeat La Salle College Preparatory in a recent Prep League matchup.

The Panthers saw their nine-game win streak end after losing at La Cañada, 13-5, in a nonleague game on Saturday.
Senior Liz Fogassa registered three goals while senior Tonanxochitl Ortega and junior Natalie Vincent each added one goal.
Poly crushed visiting La Salle College Preparatory, 14-3, in a Prep League game last Friday as Fogassa racked up a game-high six goals and two steals. Freshman goalie Georgia Collister posted 15 saves, Vincent registered four goals, two assists and two steals, and Ortega finished with three goals and three steals. Junior Kaylin Yagura tallied one goal, two steals and one assist, junior Willa Bortz collected one steal and one assist, and junior Ann High, junior Klaryssa Cobian and sophomore Ani Hovsepyan each had one steal.
The Panthers previously defeated visiting Mayfield Senior in a league game, 15-4, as Fogassa amassed a game-high 12 goals and three steals. Yagura recorded two goals, three assists and one steal while Vincent finished with one goal and eight steals. Ortega and Bortz each tallied three steals, sophomore Amelia Yoong and Hovsepyan each had one steal, and High was credited with an assist.
Poly (10-4 overall, 4-0 in league) will visit Brentwood School in Los Angeles on Friday, Jan. 13, at 4 p.m. before hosting crosstown rival Polytechnic for a league rematch on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

LA SALLE

La Salle Madailein Gregg had one steal in a Prep League game against Polytechnic last week.

The Lancers were defeated at Polytechnic, 14-3, in a Prep League game last Friday.
Senior Maya Magluyan scored a pair of goals while senior Audrey Turner recorded one goal and three steals. Senior Monica Villasenor registered nine saves, five steals and one assist, sophomore River Lee tallied five steals and sophomore Grace Kachmarsky posted a pair of steals. Senior Madailein Gregg, juniors Cameron Turner and Chloe Gao, and sophomore Sophia Culver each had one steal while sophomore Matea Cepielik made one save.
La Salle previously collected a 14-4 league victory over Brentwood School in Los Angeles as Audrey Turner registered a game-high six goals with three steals. Villasenor racked up 21 saves, four steals and four assists, Lee finished with three goals, six assists and five steals, and Kachmarsky produced three goals, three steals and two assists. Cameron Turner scored two goals with one steal and one assist while junior Lola Waters and Cepielik each had one steal.
The Lancers (7-6 overall, 3-1 in league) will visit Westridge School for a league game on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. before visiting Brentwood School for a rematch on Thursday, Jan. 19.

WESTRIDGE

Westridge Reema Rafifar had one steal in a Prep League game against Brentwood last week.

The Tigers lost to visiting Brentwood School, 12-4, in a Prep League game last Tuesday.
Josephine Wong registered two goals, one assist and one steal, Margaret Northrop tallied five steals and one goal, and Emery Fishbach finished with four steals and one goal. Devanie Alviter posted two steals while Reema Rafifar, Ashley Spence, Irene Awori and Cyana Lee each had one steal.
Westridge had its nonleague game against Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy of La Cañada Flintridge canceled due to inclement weather on Jan. 5. A makeup date was not confirmed by the Pasadena Outlook’s press deadline.
The Tigers (2-6 overall, 1-4 in league) will visit Marlborough High in Los Angeles today at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Palos Verdes Chadwick in a league game on Friday, Jan. 13.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

The Tologs were scheduled to return to action by hosting Westridge School last Thursday but the nonleague game was canceled due to inclement weather.
FSHA took a perfect 11-0 overall record into its Mission League opener at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks this week but the game ended after the Outlook’s press deadline.
The Tologs will continue league action by hosting Marymount High of Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

  • Flintridge Prep’s Vittoria Montagna and the Wolves will visit Mayfield Senior for a Prep League rematch on Friday, Jan. 13, at 5:15 p.m.
  • Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s Kaitlyn Beltz and the Tologs will continue Mission League action by hosting Marymount High of Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m.

The Wolves’ Prep League game at Brentwood School in Los Angeles last Friday was postponed and was rescheduled to the last week of January.
Flintridge Prep (6-5 overall, 2-1 in league) will visit Mayfield Senior for a league rematch on Friday, Jan. 13, at 5:15 p.m. before visiting Polytechnic for league rematch on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
