First published in the Feb. 9 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

The Pasadena Unified School District recently awarded the winners for its spelling bee, including 6th-grader Derek Gao of Sierra Madre Middle School, who won first place.
His winning word was inscrutable (meaning “impossible to understand”). At the competition, 4th-, 5th- and 6th-grade competitors went head-to-head for 21 challenging rounds.
At its conclusion, Marshall Fundamental 6th-grader Racquel Boer placed second and Sierra Madre Elementary 5th-grader Madeleine Butler placed third.
