Local Teams Prepare for League Matches

The Maranatha High School varsity girls’ tennis team picked up its second straight road victory after edging Alhambra, 10-8, last Thursday.
No. 1 singles player Stella Hsieh continued her dominance on the court, sweeping 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, while the No. 1 doubles team of Kasey McCoy and Esmee Eaton also swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. The No. 2 tandem of Mia Huang and Mia Su won a pair of sets, 6-2, 6-3, the No. 3 duo of Marie Wolfrum and Nelli Breuer won a back-and-forth battle in the first round, 7-6, and No. 2 singles player Natalie Arminak won one set, 6-3.
The Minutemen snapped a three-match losing streak after defeating host Blair, 13-5, last Tuesday, as No. 1 singles player Hsieh swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. No. 2 singles player Arminak won a pair of sets 6-4, 6-1, while the No. 2 doubles team of Huang and Su won a pair of sets 6-1, 7-5 before being subbed for Diana Sarksyan and Audrey Ayrapetyan, who made their varsity debuts and registered a perfect 6-0 victory. The No. 1 tandem of McCoy and Eaton won two sets by scores of 6-0, the No. 3 duo of Wolfrum and Breuer won two sets 6-1, 6-0, and No. 3 singles player Kathryn Khalil chipped in a 6-1 victory.
Maranatha lost a nonleague matchup at South Pasadena, 13-5, on Sept. 8, as the No. 2 doubles team of Huang and Su won a pair of sets, 6-0, 6-2. No. 1 singles player Hsieh only won, 6-2, while battling heat-related issues the first two sets. No. 2 singles player Arminak won one set, 6-1.
The Minutemen lost a nonleague match at Mark Keppel, 14-4. No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Hsieh and Arminak, respectively, each won one set, 6-3. The No. 1 doubles team of McCoy and Eaton won a shortened set, 4-2, due to heat, while the No. 2 tandem of Huang and Su won one set, 6-1.
Maranatha (3-3 overall) will continue Olympic League action by visiting Whittier Christian High of La Habra on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 3:15 p.m.

POLYTECHNIC

The Panthers recently tied host Temple City, 9-9, but lost 74-68 in total games last Friday.
No. 1 singles player Junior Juliet Lord swept 7-6, 6-2, 6-2, while No. 2 singles player senior Cristina Bogaard won 6-1. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Dylan Lam and Ava Teng swept 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, while the No. 2 tandem of freshman Zara Khan and SiQi Lai won a pair of sets, 6-2, 6-1.
Poly snapped its two-match losing streak by defeating visiting San Dimas, 13-5, in a nonleague contest last Thursday. No. 1 singles player Lord (7-5, 6-0, 6-0) and No. 2 singles player Bogaard (6-3, 6-1, 6-0) each swept, while No. 3 singles player junior Mariel Vargas-vonBreymann won one set, 6-3. The No. 1 doubles team of Lam and Teng swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, the No. 2 tandem of Lai and freshman Anya Patel won a pair of sets, 7-5, 6-2, and the No. 3 duo of Khan and senior Clementine Anzalone tallied one victory, 6-4.
The Panthers were edged in their Prep League opener by visiting Palos Verdes Chadwick, 10-8, on Sept. 13. The No. 1 doubles team of Lam and Teng swept 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, the No. 2 tandem of Lai and Patel picked up a pair of victories, 6-4, 6-1, and the No. 3 duo of Khan and Vargas-vonBreymann won one set, 6-4. No. 1 singles player Lord (6-1) and No. 2 singles player Bogaard (6-3) each tallied one set victory.
Poly previously lost a nonleague matchup to visiting Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Cañada Flintridge, 12-6, on Sept. 7. No. 2 singles player Teng won a pair of sets, 6-3, 13-11, while No. 1 singles player Lam won 6-2. The No. 1 doubles team of Lord and Bogaard won a pair of sets, 7-6(10-3), 6-0, while the No. 2 tandem of Lai and Patel won one set, 6-2.
The Panthers (2-3 overall, 0-1 in league) will visit Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge for a league contest on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 3:30 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

The Tologs lost a nonleague matchup at La Cañada, 14-2, on Sept. 12, as the No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Garrity and Mia Wertheimer picked up the lone victories, 6-3, 6-2.
FSHA had a nonleague matchup with Flintridge Prep canceled due to rain on Sept. 9.
The Tologs previously picked up a 12-6 nonleague victory over Pasadena Poly on Sept. 7. No. 2 singles player Madison Wu swept 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, while No. 1 singles player Nathalie Genyk picked up two wins, 6-3, 7-6. No. 3 singles player Ashley Hurjak won one set, 6-1.
The No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Garrity and Wertheimer swept, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6. Meanwhile, the No. 3 tandem of Kate Mann and Sophia Durand tallied two wins, 6-3, 6-4, and the No. 2 duo of Grace Garrity and Emma Oakland registered one set victory, 6-2.
Flintridge Sacred Heart (1-2 overall) will visit Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks for a Mission League match on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m.

WESTRIDGE

The Tigers collected a 16-2 victory in their Prep League opener over visiting Providence High in Burbank last Friday.
No. 1 singles player sophomore Jennifer Liu swept 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles player sophomore Cindy Cui (6-1, 6-0) and No. 3 singles player junior Audrey Anguiano (6-3, 6-2) each picked up a pair of victories.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Eleanor Leiter and Emma Tay swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 duo of junior Charlene Weng and Emerson Forester won one set, 6-0, before Weng was substituted for freshman Whitley Lowery. Forester and Lowery completed the sweep, posting 6-2, 6-1 victories. The No. 3 tandem of senior Arden MacLaren and junior Sofie Wong tallied two wins by scores of 6-1. MacLaren was substituted for freshman Chloe Wolas. Wong and Wolas completed the sweep in their last round, winning 6-3.
Westridge dominated host Monrovia, 18-0, in a nonleague matchup last Tuesday, as No. 1 singles player Liu was perfect by winning each set by scores of 6-0. No. 2 singles player Anguiano swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, while No. 3 singles player Wolas won 6-2 before being substituted for Cui, who picked up a pair of victories, 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 1 doubles team of Leiter and Tay swept 6-1, 6-2, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Weng and senior Michelle Jin won a pair of sets, 6-1, 6-0. Weng was substituted for Lowery and the duo tallied an uncontested win. The No. 3 duo of MacLaren and Forester also won twice, 6-0, 6-3. Forester was substituted for Wong and the pair posted an uncontested victory.
The Tigers (3-0 overall, 1-0 in league) will visit Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge for a league matchup on Friday, Sept. 23, at 3:15 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

The Wolves have been idle since their nonleague matchup against Flintridge Sacred Heart was canceled due to rain, despite leading 3-0 when play was halted.
Flintridge Prep also had a nonleague against Sierra Canyon High of Chatsworth canceled by the heat wave.
Flintridge Prep (2-0 overall) will host Westridge School in a Prep League match on Friday, Sept. 23, at 3:15 p.m.

MAYFIELD SENIOR

The Cubs picked up a 12-6 nonleague victory over visiting Louisville High of Woodland Hills last Thursday, improving to 2-0 overall. No individual statistics were reported to the Outlook.
Mayfield will visit Providence High in Burbank for a Prep League matchup on Friday, Sept. 23, at 4:30 p.m.

LA SALLE

The Lancers defeated visiting Hillcrest High of Riverside, 16-2, in a nonleague match on Sept. 13, after falling at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, 11-7, the previous week. No individual statistics were reported to the Outlook.
La Salle will open Del Rey League action by hosting Pomona Catholic High on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m.
