Pasadena Area Schools Prepare for Fall Sports

The fall sports season is around the corner and Pasadena area high schools are gearing up for varsity-level competition.

FOOTBALL
Polytechnic will open the 2022 varsity football season on the road by traveling to Francis Parker School in San Diego for a “week zero” nonleague game on Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The Panthers are scheduled for a bye the following week before returning to action at San Gabriel for a nonleague game on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m.
Flintridge Prep will open the 8-man football season by hosting Cate High of Carpinteria on Friday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. The Wolves will stay at home for a week two nonleague matchup against New Designs University Park of Los Angeles on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 3:30 p.m.
Maranatha will open with a nonleague home game against Beverly Hills on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m., followed by another nonleague game at Garey High in Pomona on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m.
La Salle College Preparatory will visit Brentwood High for its nonleague season-opener on Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m., followed by another road matchup against Sun Valley Village Christian on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m.
St. Francis will open the season with three consecutive nonleague road games. The Golden Knights will travel to West Ranch High of Valencia for their season-opener on Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m., followed by a matchup at Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. The road trip will conclude with a game against Millikan High of Long Beach on Friday, Sept. 2, before SFHS welcomes St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy of Downey on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
The Polytechnic varsity girls’ volleyball team will travel to Rio Hondo Preparatory School in Arcadia for its Prep League and season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 5 p.m. The Panthers have their home opener against Providence High of Burbank on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 3:45 p.m., followed by a crosstown league rivalry match at Flintridge Prep on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5:30 p.m. Poly will hit the road again on Thursday, Sept. 1, by traveling to Monrovia for a league match that starts at 5 p.m.
The Flintridge Prep varsity team has a busy opening month, as it kicks off the season by hosting Burbank in a nonleague match on Tuesday, Aug. 16. The Wolves will later compete in the two-day Providence Tournament in Burbank on Thursday, Aug. 18, and Saturday, Aug. 20; opponents were undetermined as of the Outlook’s press deadline. Flintridge Prep will play a pair of matches the following week, hosting Mayfield Senior in its Prep League opener on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. before visiting San Gabriel in a nonleague matchup on Friday, Aug. 26, at 3:30 p.m. The Wolves will compete in three additional matchups in the last week of August bleeding into September, including a crosstown rivalry league matchup against visiting Polytechnic on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5:30 p.m. Flintridge Prep will also host Chadwick School of Palos Verdes in a league match on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 5:15 p.m. and St. Genevieve of Panorama City on Friday, Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m.
Maranatha has a home season-opener lined up against nonleague opponent Bishop Amat High of La Puente on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6:15 p.m., before traveling to Whittier for a nonleague match on Thursday, August. 25. The Minutemen will close the month with a nonleague match against visiting Brentwood High of Los Angeles on Monday, Aug. 29, at 6:15 p.m., followed by another home match against Pomona on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6:15 p.m.
The Flintridge Sacred Heart varsity squad will battle Schurr High of Montebello in its nonleague home season-opener on Tuesday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. The Tologs will hit the road for the last three August matches, going to San Marino on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m., then South Pasadena on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m., and concluding with La Salle on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m.
Westridge School will host Glendale in its nonleague season-opener on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 5:45 p.m., followed by a nonleague road matchup at Burbank on Friday, Aug. 19, at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers will stay on the road as they play back-to-back matches at Arcadia on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m., and open Prep League play at Mayfield Senior on Friday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m. Westridge will return home from a pair of home league matches, starting with Rio Hondo Preparatory School on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5:30 p.m., followed by a rematch with Mayfield Senior on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m.
La Salle is expected to compete in the Molten Classic at Lakewood High against undetermined opponents on Saturday, Aug. 13. The Lancers will return to action the following week by hosting Glendora in a nonleague match on Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m., followed by the second weekend of tournament play at the Molten Classic on Saturday, Aug. 20. La Salle will travel to Arcadia for a nonleague match before hosting Flintridge Sacred Heart in another nonleague contest on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. The Lancers will go back on the road and play at Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks on Wednesday, Aug. 31, in a nonleague completion, followed by a home matchup against South Pasadena on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m.
Mayfield Senior’s season-opener against visiting Viewpoint High of Calabasas on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 p.m. is one of its five nonleague matchups on the schedule, as the Cubs jump right into Prep League play later that week. Mayfield will host Westridge School to kick off Prep League action on Friday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m., followed by a nonleague road matchup at Monrovia on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 5 p.m. A rematch at Westridge is scheduled for later in the week on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m.

BOYS’ WATER POLO
The Polytechnic varsity boys’ water polo team will host its annual tournament, which starts on Friday, Aug. 26, and ends Saturday, Aug 27. The Panthers are expected to host Hoover High of Glendale in a nonleague game on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 3:45 p.m., followed by a home nonleague matchup with Burbank on Friday, Sept. 2, at 3:45 p.m.
Flintridge Prep will kick off its season by hosting Arcadia in a nonleague game on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 3:30 p.m., followed by a nonleague matchup at San Marino on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 3:30 p.m. The Wolves are expected to compete in the Polytechnic Tournament on Friday, Aug. 26, and Saturday, Aug. 27, followed by a nonleague rivalry competition with St. Francis on Monday, Aug. 29, followed by a road game at South Pasadena on Aug. 31 at 3:30 p.m.
La Salle is scheduled to open the regular season by competing in the Corona Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 1, and Saturday, Sept. 3.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
The Polytechnic varsity girls’ tennis team will hit the road for its season-opener by visiting Alhambra in a nonleague match on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 3:30 p.m. The Panthers will return to action later that week by hosting Mark Keppel High of Alhambra in a nonleague contest on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 3:30 p.m.
The Flintridge Prep varsity squad will begin its season by hosting South Pasadena in a nonleague match on Friday, Aug. 26. The Wolves will return to action the following week with a pair of nonleague matchups to end the month. Flintridge Prep will first travel to Milken High in Los Angeles at 4 p.m., followed by a road matchup at Buckley High in Sherman Oaks. The Wolves will open the following month by hosting Heritage Christian High of Northridge in a nonleague contest on Friday, Sept. 2, at 3:15 p.m.
Maranatha is expected to open the season on the road by traveling to Mark Keppel for a nonleague matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 6, followed by a second road contest at Alhambra on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Westridge School will travel to Temple City for its season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 30, followed by another road match against La Salle College Preparatory on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
La Salle will open the regular season by traveling to King High of Riverside in a nonleague match on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 3:15 p.m., followed by a nonleague home-opener against Knight High of Palmdale on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 3:30 p.m.

CROSS-COUNTRY
The Polytechnic cross-country teams are scheduled to compete in the Gaucho Invitational at the UCSB Lagoon Course on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 8 a.m., followed by a Prep League cluster meet at Crescenta Valley Park on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The Flintridge Prep teams are scheduled to jump right into league by competing in the first Prep League cluster meet at Crescenta Valley Park on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The Wolves are also expected to compete in the Ojai Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Flintridge Sacred Heart is scheduled to compete in the Mission League cluster meet No. 1 against Harvard-Westlake High of Studio City, Immaculate Heart High of Los Angeles, Marymount High of Los Angeles, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and Sierra Canyon High of Chatsworth on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 3:30 p.m. at a neutral venue. The Polytechnic varsity girls’ golf team will kick off Prep League competitions by battling Chadwick School of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Westridge School on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The starting time of the competition was unavailable by the Outlook’s press deadline.
Flintridge Sacred Heart will visit Mayfield Senior at the Altadena Golf Course on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
