Mayfield Senior School recently hosted a 50th anniversary screening of an Elvis movie that was filmed on campus Elvis was in the building. Mayfield Senior School students, parents, alumnae and friends recently gathered for a screening of Elvis Presley’s final movie, “Change of Habit,” which was filmed 50 years ago in the school’s main building, Strub Hall.
The 1969 movie stars Mary Tyler Moore as a nun working incognito at an inner-city clinic, where she meets a singing doctor, played by Presley. Mayfield’s mahogany- and marble-filled 1919 mansion was used for the movie’s convent scenes. Alumnae from the 1960s and 1970s — including some who met “The King” during filming — were on hand to reminisce and tell behind-the-scenes stories.
According to Memphis-based Elvis historian Mary Clark, who introduced the film, Strub Hall is the world’s best-preserved Elvis movie set, thanks to the school’s stewardship. The screening was part of Mayfield’s yearlong centennial celebrations for the landmark Pasadena building, which is still an in-demand filming location for movies, TV shows and commercials.
