The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center recently hosted Water Safety for All, a community benefit aimed at promoting water safety, drowning prevention and equitable access to aquatic programming. Through a collaborative effort involving presenting sponsors No More Under, local organization Meow Meow Foundation and Arena Sport, Water Safety for All took place at Polytechnic School’s Garland Auditorium. More than 200 guests enjoyed a cocktail and paella reception and the documentary film “Drowning in Silence.” Film director Chezik Tsunoda was on hand to share her story and personal tragedy that inspired the film. Among the community attendees with ties to the RBAC were board members, donors, charitable organizations and families whose children participate in the aquatics center’s activities. Through the RBAC’s swim lesson and PUSD water safety programs, it is estimated that over half a million individuals have learned to swim. “Together, we can make a difference and save lives,” said Jimmy Francis, president and executive director of the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under age 5.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 10 people die from drowning every day in the United States, and one in five are children aged 14 or younger. The RBAC’s 3rd Grade PUSD Water Safety Program works to provide access to water safety education, regardless of background, or financial circumstances. This program has successfully empowered individuals who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to learn about water safety. These water safety initiatives are further bolstered by offering lifeguard training and scholarships for all aquatic programming offered. “The RBAC remains committed to expanding its impact and further improving water safety awareness. The program aims to establish additional partnerships, engage with more schools and community organizations, and continue developing innovative strategies to reach an even broader audience,” the RBAC said in a statement. “Thanks to the unwavering dedication of its stakeholders, Board of Directors, donors and the overwhelming support of the community, Water Safety for All is a great example of how collective efforts can bring about positive change. By prioritizing water safety and empowering individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills, this initiative lays the foundation for a safer future, where every community member can enjoy aquatic activities with confidence and peace of mind.”
