Flintridge Prep Beats La Salle in League Opener

The Flintridge Prep varsity boys’ water polo team opened Prep League action last Wednesday with a 23-11 victory over visiting La Salle College Preparatory.
Senior goalie John Bennett racked up 14 saves in the cage while senior Ty Young collected a team-high six goals. Senior Noah Corral tallied five goals, while senior Henry Brookbanks and sophomore Charlie Simonian each had four goals.
The Wolves narrowly lost a nonleague game on Sept. 21 against visiting Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks, 11-10. Senior goalie John Bennett registered 13 saves in the cage while senior Noah Corral and sophomore Charlie Simonian each scored three goals.
Flintridge Prep edged host Glendale in double overtime, 12-11, in a nonleague game last Tuesday. Bennett had 18 saves while Corral and Simonian each tallied three goals. Senior Ty Young and sophomore Ridley Tolleson each produced a pair of goals.
The Wolves (12-3 overall, 1-0 in league) will compete in the two-day Claremont Tournament on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8.

POLYTECHNIC

Poly goalie August Tonthat registered five saves but the Panthers lost last week at Long Beach Poly, 21-12.

The Panthers lost a nonleague game last Tuesday at Long Beach Poly, 21-12, as Theodore Kratter racked up seven goals and two steals. Nathan Tu collected one goal, five steals and two assists, Teddy Rountree-Shtulman tallied one goal and two steals, and Bobby Hall had one goal. Peter Ryan finished with three steals and one assist, Jesse Benitez, Malcolm Villaverde, Roy Otamura and Patrick Seo each registered one steal, and August Tonthat posted five saves.
Polytechnic (6-6 overall, 1-1 in Prep League) will compete in the third annual October Classic at Troy High in Fullerton on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8.

ST. FRANCIS

St. Francis junior Kalani Quiroz scored a pair of goals in two games for the Golden Knights.

SFHS remained winless in Mission League action after narrowly losing last Wednesday at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, 10-8. Senior Jason Alietti led with four goals, senior Jozef Gutierrez produced three goals and three steals, and sophomore Nick Karamarian added one goal. Meanwhile, senior goalie Nicola Notaro collected six saves in the cage and senior Noel Gutierrez tallied a pair of steals.
The Golden Knights picked up their third straight nonleague victory on Sept. 21 after edging visiting Temple City, 15-14. The seesaw game had seven lead changes, but Alietti’s deciding goal with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter helped secure the win. Alietti finished the contest with a game-high five goals, while Jozef Gutierrez and Karamarian each posted three goals. Sophomore Esai Somilleda registered a pair of goals, while senior Nicola Notaro and junior Kalani Quiroz each scored once.
SFHS dominated host South Pasadena, 15-7, as Alietti tallied a game-high seven goals. Jozef Gutierrez recorded four goals, Noel Gutierrez produced a pair of goals, and Quiroz and Karamarian each had one goal.
St. Francis (9-9 overall, 0-3 in league) will compete in the two-day Claremont Tournament on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8.

LA SALLE

La Salle junior Ryan Rivard produced three goals, 10 assists and 11 steals to help the Lancers finish 3-1 at the Claremont Tournament.

The Lancers lost a Prep League matchup at Flintridge Prep last Wednesday, 23-11.
La Salle previously competed in the Claremont Tournament on Sept. 23-24, finishing with a 3-1 record. La Salle lost its only tournament game to Fullerton Sunny Hills, 18-4. Freshman Tanner Borowitz posted two goals, two blocks and one steal, junior Sam Zhang registered one goal and two steals, and sophomore Zachary Cote had one goal. Senior Dustin Goei racked up 10 saves, while sophomore tallied Brady Goei five save. Senior Isaac “Zacky” Culver and junior Ryan Rivard each recorded three steals and one assist, while senior Noah Sheikh finished with one steal and one assist
The Lancers opened the second day of tournament play by defeating Saddleback High of Santa Ana, 13-9. Culver racked up five goals and two assists, Borowitz posted three goals, six blocks, four assists and three steals, and Zhang collected three goals, two steals and one assist. Senior Luca Yurchak finish with one goal, two assists and two steals, senior Miguel Del Rio registered one goal and one steal, and Rivard had one goal, two steals, two assists and one block. Dustin Goei tallied seven saves, while Brady Goei produced one save and one steal. Senior Lucas Tiet recorded one block and one steal, Cote had a pair of steals, and junior Maddox An notched one block.
La Salle ended the first day of tournament play by routing West Torrance, 18-9, as Culver amassed 10 goals. Borowitz collected three goals, four steals, four assists and three blocks, senior Quinn Nevell produced two goals and one assist, and Zhang tallied two goals and three steals. Maddox An registered one goal and one assist, Dustin Goei recorded eight saves, and Brady Goei finished with two saves, one assist and one steal. Rivard posted four assists and one steal, while Cote had one steal.
The Lancers opened tournament play by defeating Rowland High of Rowland Heights, 10-6, as Borowitz amassed three goals, eight steals, two assists and one block. Culver racked up three goals and eight steals, while Rivard posted two goals, five steals and three assists. Nevell registered one goal and one assist, while Cote had one goal, one assist and one steal. Dustin Goei collected eight saves, Yurchak tallied four steals, and Tiet recorded three steals and one assist. Senior Gus Gladstein had two steals, while Sheikh produced one assist.
The Lancers (7-8 overall, 0-3 in league) will continue league action at Brentwood School in Los Angeles on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m.
