Marshall Fundamental Thinks Big With Innovation Projects

First published in the Dec. 30 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Marshall Fundamental Secondary School students recently gathered to discuss research and create presentations for solutions as part of their annual, school-wide Innovation Projects.
This activity is a tradition that began in 2015 and has become a popular way to engage students.
The Innovation Projects are centered on specific real-world issues. Students, in all grades and of all abilities, engage in analytical thinking in finding solutions aligned with the selected theme. This year’s theme was economics.
Some topics for this year’s projects included affordable housing, pink tax (the taxing on feminine products), adequate jobs for people with disabilities, the college student debt crisis, the effects of cryptocurrency, COVID-19 and its impact on single parents and more.
Past themes have included drought, transportation, waste management and housing.
In 2018, Marshall Fundamental received the Civic Learning Award of Excellence, which was co-sponsored by state Superintendent and California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye. The award recognized the important role of students participating in democracy and in civic education.
From the school-wide presentations, the top 10 to 12 projects and presentations will be shared with industry professionals, who will select a winner for the best ideas and presentations.
