First Tee Instructs Latina Golfers

First published in the Dec. 30 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

First Tee-Greater Pasadena recently hosted the Latina Golfers Association for a morning of golf instruction from First Tee coaches and staff at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.
Latina Golfers Association members were invited to bring their daughters, nieces and granddaughters to be introduced to the game of golf in a fun and friendly environment.
With more than 30 participants in attendance, all donned in gifted pink First Tee hats, coaches and staff provided the group with putting, chipping and full-swing activities. After a meet and greet with members and coaches, the aim was to turn the group of 15 women and 17 girls from curious golfers into life-long golfers. In attendance was LGA member Maxine Harris, a senior sales representative for Nike golf. She shared how important it is that girls and young women pick up the game of golf for their future professional lives — a message that is shared with the founder of Latina Golfers Association, Azucena Maldonado.
Maldonado’s mission was to introduce women of all ages to the game of golf for professional development, personal enjoyment and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
“My passion for golf led me to found the Latina Golfers Association. I absolutely love introducing women, especially Latinas, to golf. It’s a sport that enhances women’s lives on a personal and professional level,” said Maldonado, who founded the organization in 2008.
First Tee-Greater Pasadena is celebrating 15 years of positive youth development whose mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Partnering with programs like LGA shows their commitment to building game changers in this community. The two organizations look forward to meeting again in the future for events that support their respective community goals.
