Flintridge Prep Defeats Mayfield Senior; La Salle, Poly, FSHA, Westridge, Maranatha in Action

First published in the Dec. 30 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Flintridge Preparatory School’s varsity girls’ basketball team earned its 69th consecutive Prep League victory spanning back to the 2015-16 season with a 62-19 route at Mayfield Senior on Tuesday, Dec. 14. Ironically, the Wolves’ last league loss came via the Cubs nearly five years ago on Jan. 6, 2016.
Wolves junior point guard Ashley Chea registered a double-double with 29 points, 12 rebounds and six steals, while sophomore guard Maddie Chiu added 23 points, five rebounds and three steals.
“Both Maddie and Ashley are great basketball players. They bring a lot of experience,” Flintridge Prep co-head coach Jayme Kiyomura-Chan said. “Maddie had a great offensive performance and gave a lot of effort on the defensive end. Ashley is coming off an ACL tear [from last season] and she’s looking great.”
Sophomore guard Kassidy Huie scored seven points, while freshman power forward Olivia Childs and sophomore guard Catherine Baldocchi had two and one points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Mayfield struggled to find momentum on offense, being limited to single-digit scoring in each quarter.
Cubs freshman Christine Ellis recorded a team-high five points, all coming in the second half, while freshman teammate Jenna Domingo had four points and two rebounds. Seniors Siobhan Clancy and Alexa Valenzuela, and freshman Kristen Awakuni each scored three points, while senior Natalie Boutros scored one point.
“I don’t think we played horribly, but I don’t think we played great either. I think all the kids worked hard,” Mayfield fourth-year head coach Kenneth Fisher said. “Flintridge Prep hasn’t lost in league in five years, so it’s not like it was anything unexpected. This one is not going to impact us; it’s hard to beat that team.”
Flintridge Prep moved the league win streak to a historic 70 games after defeating visiting Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep, 52-37, on Dec. 17. Chiu scored a game-high 21 points and Chea had 19 points. Kassidy Huie added seven points, while Maddi Huie and senior strong forward Riley Hause recorded three and two points, respectively.
The Wolves (8-4 overall record, 4-0 in league) recently competed in the La Cañada tournament; the results will be included in the next edition of the Pasadena Outlook. Flintridge Prep will resume league action by hosting Providence of Burbank on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m., seeking its 71st consecutive league win.
