Mayfield Competes in Nike National Tournament

The Mayfield Senior varsity girls’ volleyball team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in the prestigious Nike Tournament of Champions, a competition that showcases 96 of the best high school volleyball programs in the nation.
Facing stiff competition, the Cubs dropped three matches in pool play against Vista Murrieta and two Arizona schools (Millennium and Seton Catholic) but bounced back with a victory over Poly Prep Country Day of Brooklyn, New York, in the consolation bracket.
The victory placed Mayfield in the silver bracket, where the team then suffered losses to La Jolla Bishop’s and Ontario Christian. The squad managed to close out the tournament with a victory over Seton Catholic.
The Cubs (25-10 overall), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 5, are tied with Polytechnic atop of the Prep League standings with a 10-1 record.

Maranatha
The Minutemen were swept by visiting Cerritos Valley Christian in an Olympic League match last week.
Maranatha fell to 5-18 on the season, including a 1-5 mark in league play. The team’s lone Olympic League victory was a three-game sweep over Northridge Heritage Christian on Sept. 28. No individual statistics were reported to The Outlook.

La Salle
The Lancers are closing in on the Del Rey League championship following a three-game sweep over visiting Lakewood Saint Joseph on Sept. 30. No individual player statistics were reported.
La Salle (20-4 overall) remains unbeaten in league play with a 6-0 record.

Flintridge Sacred Heart
The Tologs suffered their third Sunshine League setback of the season, falling to visiting Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in four sets, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25, last week.
Peyton Dejardin led FSHA (24-11 overall, 4-3 in league) with 15 kills and six aces, and teammate Emily Smith recorded a team-high 27 assists. Luisa Madrigal finished with seven kills, Veronica Udell had four kills and two blocks, Keira Limon also recorded four kills and Piper Scherbert contributed three kills and two blocks. Caitlin Du led the team with 20 digs and added three aces, and Lindsey Du added 15 digs and three aces.

Westridge
The Tigers picked up a Prep League victory by defeating visiting Flintridge Prep in five sets on Sept. 28.
