Organizations Partner to Provide Housing to Women in Community College

First published in the Oct. 7 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Maryvale and the Shower of Hope recently partnered to provide temporary, safe housing for housing insecure female community college students.
Maryvale, Los Angeles’ longest-running charity dedicated to serving children and families, and the nonprofit the Shower of Hope has brought the Hope Housing for Students Program to Maryvale’s Rosemead campus. The program is dedicated to helping students realize their potential and educational dreams despite challenging circumstances.

Currently, about 10 previously unhoused students from Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College and Pierce College reside at the Maryvale campus, with a goal to double the number of students by year’s end. In addition to subsidized housing, the program provides students access to outpatient mental health counseling services, as well as food, clothing and hygiene products.
“Hope Housing for Students has given me a home while I pursue my education,” said Clarissa, a student at ELAC now living at Maryvale. “Here I’ve been seen as an individual where people understand the struggles I’ve been through and have given me the time and space to grow and to dream of a future I didn’t know was possible for me.”
L.A. Community College District students facing housing insecurity can learn more at maryvale.org/hopehousingforstudents, or apply by contacting (626) 999-1856 and completing an application.
