Local Athletes Highlighted With League Awards

The Prep League recently released its all-league awards for football, girls’ volleyball, boys’ water polo, girls’ tennis, cross-country and girls’ golf following the completion of the fall season.
Polytechnic, Flintridge Prep, Westridge School and Mayfield Senior athletes were recognized for their season-long accomplishments, hard work and outstanding contributions to their teams.

FOOTBALL
Flintridge Prep senior Griffin Theis collected the Prep League’s defensive MVP award and a first team recognition, helping lead the Wolves to their second consecutive eight-man division postseason appearance. Junior Noah Willingham was recognized on the first team for offense, while freshman William Grable was selected to the first team for defense. Senior Luca Yeghnazar and junior Kevin Zhang each earned a second team selection for offense and defense, respectively.
Poly, which competes in the 11-man Rio Hondo League, also had individuals recognized for their league performances, as Griffin Unanue earned first team defensive line honors. August Shuckhart was named second team offensive line, Pierre Vincent was selected to the second team defensive back, and Nathaniel Marko and Nicolas Cardenas earned honorable mentions.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Mayfield Senior senior Annelise Rising was recognized as the Prep League MVP after helping lead her volleyball team to an undefeated league title.

Mayfield Senior finished as undefeated Prep League champions with a perfect 12-0 record (22-7 overall), led by Prep League MVP, senior Annelise Rising. Sophomore Audrey Nuckols was named to the first team, while juniors Kayla Bandow and Holly Hillman each earned second team recognition.
Polytechnic finished the season as Prep League runners-up with a 10-2 record (15-3 overall) but advanced all the way to the CIF-Southern Section Division IV semifinals. The Panthers were led to a CIF-SS and state appearance by senior Emily Wen and junior Cyanne Jones, who were each recognized on the first team. Teammates senior Rebekah Hong and sophomore CJ Holdsworth were selected for the second team.
Westridge finished third in the Prep League standings with a 7-5 record (11-8 overall) and was eliminated in the first round of the CIF-SS Division V playoffs. The Tigers were led to a postseason berth by senior Grace Nelson and junior Jade Ilas, who each earned first team selections. Sophomore teammate Jordan Boskovich earned a second team selection.
Flintridge Prep concluded the season fifth in the Prep League standings with a 5-7 record (14-10 overall) and earned an at-large bid for the CIF-SS Division V playoffs with a strong season and a winning record. The Wolves were led to a postseason berth by junior Jessica Powell and freshman Abbie Callaway, who were each named to the first team. Junior teammate Marissa Halley earned a second team selection

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Poly senior Peter Ryan earned All-Prep League first team honors.

The Flintridge Prep varsity boys’ water polo team advanced to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs before falling to Capistrano Valley High of Mission Viejo. The Wolves finished as league runners-up with a 5-3 record (20-9 overall), led by seniors Noah Corral and Henry Brookbanks, who each earned first team honors. Flintridge Prep standout goalie, senior John Bennett, as well as senior Ty Young and sophomore Elliott Oakes were second team selections.
Polytechnic finished third in the Prep League standings with a 4-4 record (10-13 overall) and was eliminated in the first round of the CIF-SS Division III playoffs. Peter Ryan helped lead the Panthers to the postseason and was named to the first team for his efforts in the pool. Teddy Rountree-Shtulman and Nathan Tu were each recognized with second team honors.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Westridge senior Ellie Leiter and her doubles partner Emma Tay (not pictured) were recognized as Prep League MVPs after a dominant showcase in individual tennis competitions.

Mayfield Senior School’s Samantha Frick, a senior, earned her third consecutive Prep League singles MVP. Mayfield freshman Allison Huang earned second team singles recognition. The Mayfield double teams of junior Rory Rago and sophomore Sarah Leiva, and senior Sheryl Cheng and freshman Brooke Aloe, earned first and second team honors, respectively.
The Westridge doubles team of seniors Emma Tay and Ellie Leiter hauled in Prep League doubles MVP hardware after a strong showing at the individual competitions. Freshman Jennifer Liu was named second team singles while the tandem of senior Arden MacLaren and freshman Emerson Forester earned second team doubles recognition.
Polytechnic junior Juliet Lord was first team singles, while the duo of sophomores Ava Teng and Dylan Lam were first team doubles.

CROSS-COUNTRY
The Mayfield Senior varsity girls’ cross-country team finished as Prep League runners-up behind Palos Verdes Chadwick. Senior Cecilia Kvochak was named to the first team while sophomore Sissy Page and freshman Lauren Hoshek earned a second team placement.
The Flintridge Prep boys’ team also finished as Prep league runners-up behind Providence High of Burbank, as Carter Sakai, Kevin Martinez, Nicolas Stanton and Evan Guyer each earned second team selections. Meanwhile for the girls’ team, Anya Rose, Jenna Moutes and Sarah Bonk were named to the second team.
Poly senior Adrian Lazzi and sophomore Rohen Peters earned first team selections for the boys’ squad, while sophomore Stella Keatley was named to the first team for the girls’ squad.

GIRLS’ GOLF
Poly sophomore Annabelle Chan and freshman Cici Liu, and Westridge’s Claudia Zhang were each recognized on the All-Prep League first team.
