Maranatha, Mayfield Remain Unbeaten in League

The Maranatha High School varsity girls’ tennis team picked up its sixth straight victory after defeating visiting Providence High of Burbank, 13-5, in a nonleague match last Thursday.
No. 3 singles Kathryn Khalil swept her Providence counterparts, 6-0, 6-3, 1-6. No. 1 singles Stella Hsieh dominated the court again, collecting a pair of 6-0 victories before alternating with Audrey Loh, who finished the sweep with a 6-3 win. No. 2 singles Natalie Arminak also tallied a pair of 6-0 victories before alternating with Sofia Celis in the third set. The No. 1 doubles team of Kasey McCoy and Esmee Eaton swept, 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. The No. 2 tandem of Mia Huang and Mia Su won a pair of sets, 6-0, 6-3, before alternating with Audrey Ayrapetyan and Diana Sarksyan. The No. 3 duo of Nelli Breuer and Marie Wolfrum added one win, 6-2.
The Minutemen improved to 3-0 in Olympic League play after defeating host Valley Christian High in Cerritos last Tuesday, 11-7. No. 3 singles alternate Loh, who made her season debut, won one set, 6-3, while No. 1 singles Hsieh (6-2) and No. 2 singles Arminak (6-1) also registered one set victory. The No. 2 doubles team of Huang and Su recorded a pair of victories, 6-3, 6-2, while the No. 3 tandem of Breuer and Wolfrum, and the No. 1 duo of McCoy and Eaton each won one set, 6-2.
Maranatha picked up a league victory at Whittier Christian High in La Habra, 14-4.
No. 1 singles Hsieh and the No. 1 doubles team of McCoy and Eaton were perfect, each sweeping their sets by 6-0 scores. The No. 2 tandem of Huang and Su (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), and the No. 3 duo of Breuer and Wolfrum (6-1, 6-0, 6-1) each swept their sets. No. 2 singles Arminak and No. 3 singles Khalil each registered a 6-0 victory.
The Minutemen opened league action on Sept. 20 by dominating visiting Village Christian High of Sun Valley, 14-4. The doubles team was perfect in their home opener, as the No. 1 team of McCoy and Eaton, and the No. 2 tandem of Mia Huang/Mia Su each collected 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 victories. The No. 3 duo of Breuer and Wolfrum finished the sweep by posting 6-0, 6-2, 6-0 victories. No. 1 singles Hsieh swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles Arminak picked up a pair of victories, 6-2, 6-3.
Maranatha (7-3 overall) will travel to Village Christian for a league rematch on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 1:30 p.m.

MAYFIELD SENIOR

Mayfield’s No. 1 singles player Samantha Frick hasn’t lost a set in her last three matches to help the Cubs remain undefeated this season.

The Cubs remained undefeated in Prep League play last Thursday after beating visiting Polytechnic, 13-5. No. 1 singles Samantha Frick swept, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles Sheryl Cheng (6-1, 6-1) and No. 3 singles Allison Huang (6-0, 6-0) each tallied a pair of victories. The No. 2 doubles team of Aurora Rago and Sarah Leiva swept, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, the No. 3 tandem of Abigail Beegle and Brooke Aloe tallied a pair of victories, 6-1, 6-1, and the No. 1 duo of Anna Kingston and Grace Nguyen won one set, 6-2.
It was a clean sweep for Mayfield Senior on Sept. 23 as it crushed host Providence High in Burbank in a league matchup, 18-0. No. 1 singles Frick and No. 2 Cheng each went undefeated, winning all six sets 6-0. No. 3 singles Francesca Villarruel won her opening set, 6-1, before being substituted for Rago, who completed the sweep, 6-0, 6-1. The No. 2 tandem of Kingston and Aloe won, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Grace Gamble and Huang won a pair of sets, 6-0, 6-1, before Huang was substituted for Mia Mayer. Gamble and Mayer won easily, 6-1. The No. 3 duo of Beegle and Emilia Venckus won their opening set, 6-0, before Beegle was substituted for Amy Tanaka. Venckus and Tanaka finished the sweep, 6-2, 6-1.
The Cubs collected a league victory at Westridge School, 11-7. No. 1 singles Frick swept, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, No. 3 singles Huang registered a pair of victories each by scores of 6-2, and No. 2 singles Aloe won one set, 7-5. The No. 2 tandem of Kingston and Cheng (6-1, 6-2), and the No. 3 team of Rago and Leiva (6-3, 6-1) each won a pair of sets, while the No. 1 duo of Beegle and Nguyen won a set, 6-4.
Undefeated Mayfield (5-0 overall, 3-0 in league) will continue league action at Flintridge Prep on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:15 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE PREP

Flintridge Prep junior Katharina Zirn picked up a pair of 6-0 wins to help the Wolves edge Westridge in a Prep League match.

The Wolves dropped a Prep League contest last Friday at Palos Verdes Chadwick, 11-7. The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Rachel DeMerit and Sophie Haddad swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 2 tandem of juniors Kayla Lee and Nicole Lee picked up a pair of victories, 6-2, 6-1. No. 2 singles senior Chloe Liao (6-0) and No. 1 singles freshman Sienna Beltz (6-2) each won one set.
Flintridge Prep picked up a league victory last Wednesday at Poly, 11-7. No. 1 singles Beltz (6-3, 6-3) and No. 3 singles Liao (6-1, 6-1) each won a pair of sets. No. 2 singles sophomore Emily Hsiao won one set, 6-3, before being substituted for Nicole Lee, who also won one set, 6-2. The No. 1 doubles team of DeMerit and Haddad tallied a pair of victories, 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 3 duo of sophomore Vanessa Hsu and freshman Kate Snaer recorded one win, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles tandem of senior Avery Hobey and Kayla Lee won one set, 6-2, before being substituted for senior Miranda Thomson and sophomore Minda Lai, who also won one set 7-6.
The Wolves edged visiting Westridge in a league contest, 10-8. No. 2 singles Hsiao swept, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0, No. 1 singles junior Katharina Zirn picked up a pair of 6-0 wins, and No. 3 singles Haddad won one set, 7-5. Flintridge Prep lost a nonleague match on Sept. 21 at La Cañada, 14-4. No. 1 singles Zirn swept by scores of 6-3, while the No. 1 tandem of DeMerit and Beltz tallied the lone doubles victory, 6-4.
The Wolves lost a nonleague matchup at Mark Keppel High in Alhambra, 11-7. No. 2 singles Hsiao registered a pair of victories, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 1 singles Zirn (6-1) and No. 3 singles Haddad (6-2) each won one set. The No. 1 doubles team of Beltz and DeMerit won a pair of sets, 6-4, 6-0, while the No. 2 tandem of Kayla Lee and Hsu won one set, 6-1.
Flintridge Prep (4-3 overall, 2-1 in league) will host undefeated Mayfield Senior in a league match on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:15 p.m.

POLYTECHNIC

Poly No. 1 singles player junior Juliet Lord produced a pair of victories, 6-3, 6-3 as the Panthers lost a Prep League match against host Flintridge Prep last week.

The Panthers lost a Prep League matchup last Thursday against host Mayfield Senior, 13-5. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Dylan Lam and Ava Teng won a pair of sets, 6-1, 6-3, while the No. 2 tandem of sophomore SiQi Lai and freshman Anya Patel tallied one set victory, 6-0. Meanwhile, No. 1 singles player junior Juliet Lord won two sets each by scores of 6-3.
Poly lost a league match last Wednesday at Flintridge Prep in La Cañada Flintridge, 11-7. The No. 1 duo of Lam and Teng swept, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. No. 1 singles player Lord tallied a pair of victories, 6-2, 6-0, and completed the sweep when her Flintridge Prep opponent forfeited the third set due to injury. The No. 2 doubles team of Lai and freshman Zara Khan won one set, 6-3.
The Panthers (2-5 overall, 0-3 in league) will travel to Burbank to battle Providence High in a league match on Friday, Oct. 7, at 4:30 p.m.

WESTRIDGE

The Tigers were edged in a Prep League matchup at Flintridge Prep, 10-8.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Ellie Leiter and Emma Tay swept, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6, while the No. 2 tandem of senior Arden MacLaren and freshman Emerson Forester tallied a pair of victories, 6-4, 6-2. No. 1 singles sophomore Jennifer Liu won a pair of sets, 6-2, 6-0, while No. 2 singles sophomore Cindy Cui won one set, 6-1.
Westridge previously lost a league match against visiting Mayfield Senior, 11-7.
The No. 1 duo of Leiter and Tay won all three sets by scores of 6-2, while the No. 2 team of MacLaren and Forester won one set, 6-3. No. 1 singles Liu won a pair of sets each by scores of 6-2, while No. 2 singles Cui won one set 6-3.
The Tigers (3-2 overall, 1-2 in league) will continue league action at Palos Verdes Chadwick on Friday, Oct. 7, at 3:30 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy’s No. 3 singles player Ashley Hurjak won one set, 6-1, to help the Tologs pick up their first Mission League victory of the season at Chaminade.

The Tologs collected a Mission League victory last Thursday at Chaminade High in West Hills, 11-7. The No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Garrity and Kate Mann, the No. 2 tandem of Grace Garrity and Mia Wertheimer, and the No. 3 duo of Sophia Durand and Lauren Kilpatrick each won a pair of sets by scores of 6-0. No. 1 singles player Nathalie Genyk (6-2, 6-0) and No. 2 singles player Madison Wu (6-2, 6-1) each tallied a pair of victories, while No 3 singles player Ashley Hurjak added one win, 6-1.
FSHA lost a league contest last Tuesday against visiting Harvard-Westlake of Studio City, 18-0.
The Tologs also suffered a pair of league losses the previous week, falling at Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, 11-5, and against visiting Marlborough High of Los Angeles, 17-1.
FSHA (2-5 overall, 1-3 in league) will continue league play with a rematch at Marlborough on Thursday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m.

LA SALLE

The Lancers defeated visiting St. Joseph High of Lakewood last Thursday in a Del Rey League matchup, 14-4. The La Salle doubles teams of No. 1 Regan Bean and Phoebe Ding (6-1, 7-6, 6-0), No. 2 Cameron Turner and Isabelle Core (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), and No. 3 Andrea Valandia and Danielle Romero (6-1, 6-4, 6-0) each swept their competition. No. 1 singles Cayenne Lee swept her St. Joseph counterparts, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, while No. 2 singles Audrey Turner tallied a pair of wins, 6-0, 6-4.
La Salle won a league rematch at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance last Tuesday, 11-7. Singles No.2 Lee (6-1, 6-0, 6-2) and Audrey Turner (6-3, 6-2, 6-1) each swept their sets, while No. 1 Abby Zhao registered one win, 6-0. The No. 3 tandem of Valandia and Romero recorded a pair of wins by scores of 6-2, while the No. 1 duo of JJ Burgess and Emma Liang, and the No. 2 team of Cameron Turner and Core each won one set, 6-3.

No. 2 singles Lee (6-2, 6-0, 6-0), No. 3 singles Audrey Turner (6-4, 6-0, 6-1), and the No. 1 team of Burgess and Liang (6-0, 6-0, 6-1) also swept their Pomona Catholic counterparts.
La Salle routed visiting Bishop Montgomery, 18-0, in a league match. No. 1 singles Sasaki (6-0, 6-1, 6-2), No. 2 Lee (7-5, 6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 Audrey Turner (6-1, 6-0, 6-0) each won three sets. The No. 1 team of Burgess and Liang (6-0, 6-1, 6-0), the No. 2 duo of Cameron Turner and Core (6-4, 6-0, 6-0), and the No. 3 tandem of Valandia and Romero (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) swiftly handled their Bishop Montgomery opponents.
The Lancers will continue league action by hosting Pomona Catholic in a rematch on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 3 p.m.
