Local Tennis Squads Open Season Strong

After a nearly four-hour contest, the Maranatha High School varsity girls’ tennis team lost a nonleague matchup at San Gabriel, 11-7, despite senior captain Stella Hsieh displaying her dominance with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 sweeps of her opponents.
The singles players carried the load as sophomore Natalie Arminak and freshman Kathryn Khalil won two sets (6-3, 7-6) and one set (6-1), respectively.
The Maranatha doubles teams garnered one set win, as freshmen Mia Huang and Mia Su earned a convincing 6-0 victory in the opening round.
The Minutemen won their nonleague season-opener over host Pasadena, 12-6, last Tuesday. Maranatha was able to claim a decisive victory behind dominant openings by Hsieh the No. 1 doubles tandem of Kasey McCoy and Esmee Eaton. Hsieh swept her opponents 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, while McCoy and Eaton also swept 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-2.
Arminak picked up a pair of set victories, 6-4, 6-2, while the doubled pair of Mia Huang and Mia Su collected two set wins, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Kathryn Khalil and the doubled team of Marie Wolfrum and Nelli Breuer won one set each, 6-4 and 6-2, respectively.
The Minutemen (1-1 overall) will visit Alhambra in a nonleague matchup on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 3:15 p.m.

POLYTECHNIC
The Panthers defeated host Alhambra, 13-6, in its season opener last Tuesday. Poly succeeded behind strong play by senior Cristina Bogaard, junior Juliet Lord, and the doubles team of sophomore Emma Hsieh and freshman Anya Patel.
The Panthers (0-1 overall) will visit Temple City in a nonleague matchup on Friday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE PREP
The Wolves improved to 2-0 after a dominant 11-1 victory at Milken Community School in Los Angeles last Tuesday. Flintridge Prep previously collected a season-opening victory by edging visiting South Pasadena, 10-8. No individual statistics were reported to the Pasadena Outlook.
The Wolves will play Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy of La Cañada Flintridge at Scholl Canyon Golf & Tennis Club on Friday, Sept. 9, at 3:15 p.m.

FLINTRIDGE SACRED HEART
The Tologs dropped their nonleague season-opener at Burbank, 11-7. No individual statistics were reported to the Pasadena Outlook.
FSHA (0-1 overall) will play Flintridge Prep at Scholl Canyon Golf & Tennis Club on Friday, Sept. 9, at 3:15 p.m.

WESTRIDGE
The Tigers collected a dominant nonleague season-opening victory at Temple City, 14-4, on Aug. 30. No individual statistics were reported to the Pasadena Outlook.
Westridge (1-0 overall) will visit Immaculate Heart High of Los Angeles at Griffith Park Vermont Canyon Tennis Courts on Friday, Sept. 9, at 3:30 p.m.

MAYFIELD SENIOR
The Cubs won their nonleague season opener in dominant fashion by downing host Immaculate Heart High in Los Angeles, 14-4, on Aug. 30. No individual statistics were reported to the Pasadena Outlook.
Mayfield Senior (1-0) will host Louisville High of Woodland Hills at Whittier Narrows on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 3:30 p.m.

LA SALLE
The Lancers had their season opener at Martin Luther King High in Riverside canceled due to heat on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
La Salle will visit Notre Dame High of Sherman Oaks for a nonleague match at Braemar Country Club at 2 p.m.
