PUSD Proud for 50 Years

First published in the Aug. 11 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

A time of reflection and remembrance, anniversaries also present a time to imagine and explore what lies ahead.
In 1971, forward-looking civic leaders and PUSD administrators created the Pasadena Educational Foundation as an independent organization tasked with supporting our K-12 public schools. The first of its kind in California, PEF is a model and thought leader for districts throughout the country today. And it is through the active, sustained dedication of local community members that PEF makes a difference in the lives of our youth.

Patrick Conyers PEF Executive Director

Alma Stokes is one of those key community members. A tireless educator, activist and dedicated PEF board member, Stokes inspired thousands of students during her 30-year career in PUSD and elevated thousands more through her outstanding work with many organizations that support the health, well-being and education of our youth. That’s why we honored her at PEF’s 50th anniversary celebration. Stokes reminds us one person can make an impact.
With the support of advocates like Stokes, PEF has led the way in addressing the needs of our public schools. Our experience enabled us to meet the moment of greatest need of our students, teachers and schools — the COVID-19 pandemic. PEF has championed holistic and comprehensive programs that have resulted in equitable access to quality education in a diverse environment — offering innovative opportunities for those from different racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds to connect and learn.
Now we begin our next 50 years as we began our first, with a deep sense of pride in our PUSD schools, our colleagues, and our students.
There is a place for you with us.
In the coming months Pasadena Educational Foundation will unveil a new strategic plan. With excellence and equity as our new guiding stars, we look forward to all that we can accomplish together. We invite you to support our schools — through giving, volunteering and demonstrating how much you value public education in our community. Let’s create a brighter future for all together.
