Villa Gardens Hangs Resident-Created Sculpture

First published in the April 21 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

Staff and residents at Villa Gardens recently gathered to honor resident artist Joyce Newman with a dedication to “Variations,” a site-specific sculpture she created exclusively for the senior living community.
Although she studied biochemistry and worked in that field briefly, her passion in life and her career has been in the arts, specifically clay sculpture, which Newman said she’s been fascinated with for 60 years.

“I’m thankful to Villa Gardens for the opportunity to create a piece that is unique to this special place of warmth and community,” Newman said.
Although the wall-hung, high-fired stoneware sculpture is titled “Variations,” the artist is usually reluctant to name or interpret her pieces.
“The work has no specific meaning,” Newman insists. “It is what it is to whomever looks at it.”
