Cathay Bank Celebrates 60 years

First published in the April 7 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

On April 19, 1962, Cathay Bank opened its doors in Los Angeles’ Chinatown to serve the Chinese immigrant community in Southern California.
With help from the bank’s financial services, the first clients confidently pursued their dreams — whether it was starting a business, buying a home or sending their children to college, according to bank officials.
The bank began trading publicly on Nasdaq in 1990, and, by 1999, it had expanded its footprint to the east coast. Today, it remains headquartered in Los Angeles and operates more than 60 branches throughout California, New York, Washington, Illinois, Texas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada and New Jersey.
In greater China, it opened its first overseas representative office in Hong Kong in 1985, where it currently has a branch as well as offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei.
While much has changed over six decades, the bank’s foundation remains the same: to empower those who pursue financial opportunities with confidence and optimism, according to bank officials.
They said each interaction is important, from everyday business to sophisticated loan transactions.
