Maranatha Wins Season Opener

First published in the Sept. 9 print issue of the Pasadena Outlook.

In its season opener, the Maranatha High School varsity girls’ tennis team traveled to South El Monte to take on the Yeshiva University of Los Angeles Panthers in a nonleague match at the Whittier Narrows Tennis Center.
Maranatha was only able to field eight players and spotted YULA a 3-0 lead to start the match, due to forfeiting three sets. Despite the disadvantage, the Minutemen played a well-balanced match and were paced by their singles lineup of Stella Hsieh (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), Amanda Yee (6-4, 6-0, 6-0) and Audrey Loh (6-1, 6-0, 6-1) to claim a 13-5 victory.
The No. 1 and 2 doubles teams of Kasey McCoy and Violet Salvo and Riley McCoy and Stella Chen, respectively, both went 2-1 on the day, compiling identical score lines of 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. These victories also marked the first-ever wins of each of these doubles players’ careers, the first full season for each of them.
