Muse/ique Announces Calendar for 2020-21

Muse/ique, under Artistic Director Rachael Worby, has announced dates for 2020-21, including its popular “Around Town: Live and on Film” series. Performance dates for that series will be Aug. 23, Sept. 13 and Oct. 18, as “‘Around Town’ is reimagined and redeveloped for our current environment,” according to a Muse/ique spokesperson.
“Shot on location, these live performances celebrate the musical roots that help us understand each other. These films will premiere for music lovers everywhere in the late summer and fall months,” the spokesperson added.
The upcoming “Around Town” events are:
• “Dream/House” on Aug. 23. Worby and a band of featured artists explore songs about the human habitat and the nature of being “at home” at one of America’s most famous homes.
• “Great/Vibrations,” filming on Sept. 13. With strumming, plucking bowing and the human voice, we hear vibration in music. Through stringed instruments and vocal cords, Worby and special featured artists examine the very nature of sound in an invigorating botanical setting.
• “Motown/Moves,” filming on Oct. 18. Modern dance meets Motown as guests experience the nature of movement and change through music at an iconic Pasadena streetscape.
Other upcoming programming elements include:
• “Imagination/Expanded” — Muse/ique on Sunday, Aug. 16, will present a rocking summer evening of surround sound — in a safe, private garden setting — to select members and supporters. Worby curates four musical stages and delves into some great songs, from rock and soul to Broadway and the Great American Songbook.
• “House/Music” — Muse/ique continues to innovate what it means to experience live music. “Sometimes that means returning to the basics: Instead of bringing you to the music, we bring the music to you,” the spokesperson said. Worby and select special artists “deliver highly personal, pop-up performances to your front door … or any outside space.” Since March, Muse/ique has presented more than 20 performances for select supporters and will continue to expand this program throughout the remainder of the year. Those who wish to schedule a special “House/Music” presentation at their home or business may contact Ron Silverman, executive vice president of development and communications, at ron@muse-ique.com or (626) 844-7703.
• “Muse/ique in a Minute! (…Or Two)” — The web series launched in March packs the magic of Muse/ique’s live events into, well, a minute or two. In each episode, Worby “gives us quick, sharp musicological insight and our favorite instrumentalists, vocalists, dancers and artists deliver unique, intimate performances,” the spokesperson said. Muse/ique email subscribers and education partners receive multiple new episodes in their inboxes each week. “In a Minute” episodes are also available on Muse/ique’s YouTube channel.
Also, “Muse/ique Offstage” expands the reach of Muse/ique’s live mainstage performances into Pasadena and the Greater Los Angeles area through strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations and community partners. These partners provide care and support for foster and runaway youth, low-income seniors, children and adults with developmental disabilities, and families and individuals experiencing homelessness.
“We create curriculum-based, small-group education workshops that engage participants in a deeper experience of the repertoire and themes of our mainstage performances,” the spokesperson said. “In order to continue this vital service in the current climate, these workshops are made accessible remotely. We are working with our partners to adapt these workshops for video conferencing. We will also repackage ‘Muse/ique in a Minute’ episodes with special narration by our director of education to connect to workshop themes and re-create opportunities to experience live music through our new ‘House/Music’ initiative.”
As for Muse/ique’s 10th anniversary in 2021, the organization will spotlight 10 events exploring the deep roots and change-making heritage of Los Angeles music. Next spring and fall, Muse/ique will present six site-specific live music events that explore L.A.’s unique musical character. Event repertoire and subject matter will include:
• A celebration of African-American music and musicians in Los Angeles.
• An examination of L.A. as an intersection of East and West, highlighting the confluence of Asian, American and European influences in our music and our culture.
• An immersive experience in the unique art of the film score.
• A look at the Laurel Canyon music revolution of the 1960s and ’70s.
• An exploration of what it means to be an “L.A. native.”
• A celebration of the long history and vast presence of LatinX music that emanates from our region and influences the world.
Event sites will range from Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles and the Westside, and Muse/ique will partner with many of the leading museums and cultural organizations in the region to present the project.
Meanwhile, 2021 will also feature “Muse/ique at the Huntington: A Summer of L.A. Visionaries.” The three-performance series include:
• “Dancing/Scenes,” a homage to the most famous dance scenes on film with interpretive new choreography and lush orchestration. (Performance is June 2021.)
• “Ladies/Leading”: From Ella Fitzgerald to Carol King, the most game-changing women in American music found their muse in L.A. (Performance in July 2021.)
• “L.A./Orchestrated”: A revolution in music that could only have happened here. From Brian Wilson to Phil Spector to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the city has changed how the world thinks of orchestras and orchestrations. (Performance in August 2021.)
Finally, Muse/ique’s 10th anniversary gala, appropriately themed “Muse/ique@10,” will celebrate the artists, volunteers, board members and patrons who created this one-of-a-kind music organization.
